How Do I Get Started?
The first step is to decide exactly what it is you want your page to do for you. Are you selling a product? Are you advertising your company? Are you providing a service or gathering information? There are lots of types of web pages, and the first step is understanding exactly what you want your page to do, and why.
How Much Does It Cost?
There is a very large range of possible costs, depending on the type of page you are building. A simple, static page like a brochure may cost only hundreds or a few thousand dollars. If your page requires server side programming (for e-commerce, or to contain dynamic changing content), this cost will increase. Depending on how much server side programming is necessary, and how many people will need to use the page at the same time, a dynamic site can cost anywhere between 5 and 100 thousand dollars. Glaserweb.com will meet with you to learn more about your project, and provide a full cost estimate free of charge.
Can Glaserweb.com Keep the Site Updated?
The short answer is yes, but the better answer is that we might not have to. Our specialty is creating powerful web applications that allow our clients to manage the content of their own sites quickly and easily, without needing to know anything about programming or web design. However, if you do not wish to update your own site, we can be retained at an hourly rate to update the site regularly.
How Do I Promote My Site?
In addition to traditional print and broadcast media, your site should be registered with at least the top 10 Internet search Engines, which is a relatively straightforward process.
What is a Domain Name?
Literally, it is the name of the computer that hosts a site, which is how other computers connected to the Internet can find a web site. If AOL is hosting your site, the domain is "aol.com" and if Tripod is hosting your site, the domain name is "tripod.com." It is possible to register your own domain name.
Why Should I Register a Domain Name?
If we did not register the name "glaserweb.com" the address of this page would be "www.myhostname.com/glaserweb" -- which is hard to remember, and does not feature the name of the company. By registering our domain name, people can reach us simply at "www.glaserweb.com."
How Do I Register a Domain Name?
Most web hosts will take care of this for you, but you can register a name right now, to reserve it, even if you are not ready to begin developing a page. This can be done at www.register.com.
Which Database Should I Use?
This depends entirely on the purpose of your page, and the type of server you are using. If you do not yet have server plans, we suggest using a server that runs Unix. On a Unix server, you should use the MySQL database. If you are using a Windows based server, you should use Microsoft's SQL Server database. If your company already uses a database to hold the content you want to put on the web, you can use your existing database. Otherwise the issue is performance versus cost. If you expect that your site will attract higher volume, more expensive databases such as SQL Server or Oracle will be needed to handle the load.
Why Does My Web Site Need a Database?
For many, the answer is "it doesn't." However, if you want your pages to serve dynamic content that needs to be updated regularly, or you need to take credit card orders, a database is necessary to hold this changing and updated information.
